♥ Think changing diapers is hard?

In the early 1900's babies & children were dressed in long gowns. This made changing diapers easier, as well as helped with potty training. Infants were dressed in long gowns and when they began crawling, the gowns were altered into shorter gowns that made it easier for crawling and potty training. Once they were potty trained, boys were dressed in trousers, while little girls were put into dresses more fitting their age.

All babies and children wore white back then because it was easier to bleach stains and messes out of everything. In the olden days people re-used cloth diapers for multiple uses by shaking off the mess, drying out the wet cloth, putting the soiled cloth diaper back on the baby and only washing cloth diapers on wash day (typically once a week!) The use of bleach (or chlorinated lime, as it was called then) was a must. As we all know, color fades very quickly when using bleach. Therefore white cotton made the most sense.

All boys wore little white dresses and wouldn't wear their first pair of pants until around 5 or 6 years of age. Commonly that is also the time when he would receive his first hair cut. Boys also wore the cute little strap & buckle baby doll shoes which were considered gender neutral well into the 1940' & 50's.
